In March 2011 we visited the Waterkloof Estate Stellenbosch, South Africa

Waterkloof winery Percheron Horses & workers Vineyards
In 1993 Paul Boutinot started his search for a vineyard to produce wine with a sense of origin. It took ten years to narrow the search down to a small area on the south-facing slopes of the Schaapenberg, overlooking False Bay in the Cape. Grapes were planted on Waterkloof in the early 1970s, but the production of fine wines began when the farm was planted with some of the best vines available in the mid 1990s. Among some of the concepts that Waterkloof embraces is that of organic and biodynamic agriculture. After our extensive tour of the vineyards and farm land by Christiaan we were able to see first hand the efforts and results that these methods have achieved.
As they say:- “As a company, we have a genuine love for the special piece ofland that we are privileged to own and we will therefore invest enough of our resources in conservation management. The onus is on us, and no-one else, to ensure that our natural resources, including biodiversity, are conserved on our farm. We accept this responsibility.”
Corkscrew wines currently stocks 10 wines made by the Waterkloof Estate each with there own unique character. Winemaker Werner Engelbrecht was kind enough to show us the winery and the wine making process.
The modern building at Waterkloof not only houses the winerybut also a fantastic restaurant with the most amazing views across the full expanse of the vineyards towards False Bay. French chef Grégory Czarnecki has created the most exquisite menu combining modern and classic styles. We thoroughly recommend the food and the dining experience.
